More and more users are looking for the best virtual crypto card for everyday spending.
To find out which cards really deliver, we tested 11 crypto cards by paying for a ChatGPT Go subscription through the Stripe payment gateway. This allowed us to measure the actual USDC-to-USD conversion rate and identify any hidden conversion costs. Here are the results of our experiment.
Test Methodology: Why the "ChatGPT Method"?
To make the comparison as transparent as possible, we used a ChatGPT Go subscription priced at $9.84 (including VAT).
We chose OpenAI for several reasons:
- Direct billing. Stripe processes payments on OpenAI's website without intermediaries such as Apple Pay, allowing us to measure the card issuer's real conversion rate.
- Same time window. All 10 successful transactions were completed within 30 minutes, ensuring the USDC-to-USD exchange rate remained virtually unchanged.
- USDC only. To eliminate cryptocurrency price volatility, every payment was made exclusively in USDC.
Test Results: Who Came Out on Top?
![]()
The experiment revealed a 3.69% gap between the best and worst-performing cards. That's a significant difference for a financial product marketed as a cost-effective alternative to traditional payment cards.

A Closer Look at the Results
Five cards achieved a perfect 0%
The fact that Trustee Plus, OKX Card, Tria, Revolut, and Ether Fi all charged exactly $9.84 shows that the crypto card market has matured. Fair 1:1 USDC conversion is now achievable.
A Red Flag for Major Exchanges
WhiteBIT and Bybit Card performed poorly in two independent tests in a row — both in our McDonald's experiment and in this OpenAI test.
Large exchanges often hide their fees inside the exchange rate spread instead of displaying them as an explicit transaction fee.
The Cost of a Few Percent
A difference of just a few percentage points may seem insignificant for a single purchase.
However, if you spend $50 per month on subscriptions, a Bybit Card user would pay approximately $22.14 more per year than someone using one of the top-performing cards.
Key Takeaways
- The market has become much more competitive. Half of the tested cards now provide true 1:1 conversion without hidden costs.
- A well-known brand doesn't guarantee the best value. Some of the largest exchanges offer the most expensive card products in our test.
- Always have a backup card. The Jamcard case demonstrates that even issuing or using a card can fail unexpectedly. Keeping a second payment option is simply good financial hygiene.
